Title: Self-organization algorithm for large-scale artificial sensory system

Abstract:
It is common in nature that groups of identical individuals organise themselves to fulfil a task, for instance fish shoals and bee swarms. Such groups belong to the category of multi-element systems and the process guiding their collective behaviour is known as self-organisation.
There also exist artificial systems that belong to the category of multi-element systems. Among them, artificial sensory system, which are formed by large number of sensors, have recently received considerable attention. Artificial sensory systems are deployed to monitor physical variables, such as temperature and humidity in a room. To achieve accurate measurement, a great number of sensors are needed which makes the artificial sensory system large-scale. However, it is challenging to manage such a system and analyse the information it produces. Specifically, managing the sensory system by direct human intervention can be impractical, and our ability to correct anomalies or failures can be severely limited. Therefore, in those scenarios where large-scale sensory systems are used, automatic methods for managing artificial sensory systems that do not rely on human intervention are needed.
In this research proposal, solutions to problems, like state-space analysis, pattern recognition and task assignment, are employed to devise automatic methods for managing artificial sensory systems. The objective of this research proposal is to construct an artificial sensory system which can be applied to unknown environment and work properly without human interactions.
