Title: Prioritisation of a heterogeneous handover due to rain fade in a high availability satellite network
Abstract:
Communications users are used to having high bandwidth communication links coupled with high availability. This is possible in highly populated areas where it is possible to put in place cheap wired and wireless solutions, but there are locations in the world (including maritime environments), this is not feasible or economical and in these locations service is provided via a fixed or mobile satellite solution. Satellite network users expect to have the same level of service when compared to highly populated locations. To achieve the demands to provide high bandwidth means operating satellite networks at ever higher frequencies (Ku, Ka, Q and V band), but availability is compromised by atmospheric moisture. In these environments satellite network operators will provide users that require high availability will offer a hybrid solution using a second back-up network operating at lower frequencies (L, C-band) to provide connectivity when the primary network is unavailable.
The challenge for satellite network operators is to identify when is the optimal time to switch users to the back-up network. Current switching solutions are often clunky where the remote satellite terminals decides when to switch to the back-up network using available capacity on a first come first serve basis which does not always efficiently use the available capacity in the back up. My research develops a network centric decision making process that identifies and prioritises which satellite terminal is handed over to the back up. This seminar will introduce you my research and the work I have completed to date.
