Title: Towards Realistic Simulation of WiFi Networks
Abstract:
The wireless networking community continuously questions the accuracy and validity of simulation-based performance evaluations. The main reason is the lack of widely-accepted models that represent the real wireless characteristics, especially at the physical (PHY) layer. Hence, the trend in wireless networking is to rely more and more on testbeds, which on one hand bring more realism to network and protocol evaluation, but on the other hand present a high implementation barrier before an idea is ready to be tested. Therefore, realistic network simulators are still very much needed to reduce the time and effort for “concept testing” of novel ideas. In this case, the main question is how detailed should wireless simulators be to evaluate network and protocol performance. This talk presents our work on trying to answer this question by modelling the Berlin Open Wireless Lab (BOWL) testbeds in the ns-3 simulator.
Bio:
Cigdem Sengul is currently a Senior Lecturer in Oxford Brookes University and a visiting Senior Lecturer in Queen Mary University of London.
Earlier, from 2008 to 2012, she worked in Telekom Innovation Labs in TU-Berlin (main research unit of Deutsche Telekom) as a Senior Research Scientist. During 2007-2008, she was a post-doc at INRIA in ASAP group. She received MS and PhD degrees in Computer Science from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in October 2003 and 2007, respectively. Her BS degree in Control and Computer Engineering was awarded by Istanbul Technical University (ITU), Turkey in 2000. Her MS studies were funded by Fulbright Scholarship and Department of Computer Science, UIUC fellowship. Her PhD studies were partly funded by Vodafone fellowship.
Her research interests are next generation wireless networks (LTE, WiFi, Zigbee), heterogeneous network, cross-layer protocol design, QoS and energy management, and wireless testbeds and simulators, network measurements.
