Title : Quality Of Experience (QoE) informed configuration of Quality of Service (QoS) Mechanisms
Abstract:
IP networks carry a heterogeneous mix of services that place conflicting demands on the network infrastructure. The underlying network infrastructure is built using routers whose buffers can become congested under certain traffic demand scenarios. When the network resources are congested, real time services such as voice and video are degraded by packet loss, delay and jitter. The congestion affects users QoE. Network operators mitigate these effects by applying QoS mechanisms at the router interfaces thereby controlling loss, delay and jitter. One significant challenge faced by operators is to relate the QoS mechanism applied to the end user QoE.
This research is focused on developing QoE-informed, QoS mechanisms for real time services. A test lab has been constructed at QMUL and can be configured to test various user demand scenarios and QoS mechanisms. Using commercially available router testers network behaviour can be extracted, processed and correlated.
