Title (Speaker- Bo Zhong): Performance Evaluation for Cognitive Radio Networks

Abstract:

The Cognitive Radio (CR) technique is widely recognized as a promising solution to the spectrum scarcity problem. Previously, extensive research focused on resource allocation algorithms, targeting the optimization of the MAC layer network performance in CR networks. All these papers assumed static buffer backlog(s) where packet-level queueing is considered at all. The packet level performance of any Secondary Network (SN) is challenging to evaluate due to the highly variable resource availability for any SN. However, some level of guaranteed performance is vital to the success of the CR technique, because user Quality of Experience (QoE) depends heavily on it. To be able to improve QoE over CR networks, the first step is to evaluate the characteristics of user QoE over SN. In this research, we develop a packet level network performance evaluation platform for CR and use this to identify key factors controlling the user experience.

Title (Speaker- Prof. Zhiqiang He): TD-LTE eNodeB Prototype Based on GPP Platform

Abstract:

The talk describes the problems and challenges that mobile communication industry faces, followed by a solution of using GPP (General Purpose Processors) to implement the real-time signal processing for wireless communication. The methods of design and optimization on the GPP are discussed. The testing results and performance of TD-LTE eNode prototype based on GPP are showed in the talk.

Bio:

Associate Professor Zhiqiang He received his PhD degree (with distinction) in signal and information processing from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, China, in July 2004. He joined the School of Information and Communication Engineering at the same university as a teacher, and now he is the director of the center of Information Theory and Technology. Since 2004, he has successfully led and participated in over 20 national key projects in China including National Key Science and Technology Project of China, National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program), National Natural Science Foundation of China, and National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863 Program). These projects have spanned multiple disciplines including information theory and coding, signal processing in wireless communications, networking architecture and protocol design, and prototype development for communication systems.

Prof. He has published 50 journal and conference papers, and he has developed a number of communication prototype systems during his career. Of these, the most successful has been the general purpose processor (GPP) based prototype for the LTE system that he developed with his research team. This prototype was demonstrated in the 2011 International Telecommunication Union (ITU) exhibition at Geneva, and has attracted great interests from telecommunication industries since then. Moreover, he holds 15 well cited Chinese patents. Some of them have been commercialized and successfully applied in real communication devices.
