Title: Detecting Middlebox Interference on Applications
Abstract:
Nowdays, middleboxes such as NATs, firewalls, DPIs, or proxies play an important role in today’s new networks. Since many middleboxes modify the packets that they process, the middleboxes
affect the application performance directly. However, little is known about the actual interference of middleboxes on packets, traffic and network performance.The Great Firewall of China (GFW) is an example of complex middleboxes system. As a kind of Internet censorship, GFW blocks or manipulates the network traffic in and out of the country.Compared with other Internet censorship, GFW is much more complex to censor traffic. Although the related work has provided many methodologies to study the GFW blocking technologies, it is challenging to measure how the GFW works as middleboxes in the network.

My research is aiming to detect the actual GFW methods as well as the unexpected interference on applications. My work is a study of flow level packet behaviour across a range of different port numbers and protocols. Furthermore, this study can be used to identify what middelboxes interference on applications and understand how the middleboxes are used in the Internet censorship. Also, the measurement methodologies can be used for further research about middlebox detection and Internet censorship.
