Title: Ubiquitous Mobile 3-D Video Communications over 5G:from Conceptualization to Realization

Abstract:

Dr Wei Xiang is a tenured Associate Professor in the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at the University of Southern Queensland, Australia. He received his Ph.D. degree in telecommunications engineering from the University of South Australia in 2004.  Since January 2004, he has been with University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba, Australia, where he currently holds a faculty post of Associate Professor. In 2008, he was a visiting scholar at the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. During Oct. 2010 and Mar. 2011, he was a visiting scholar at the University of Mississippi, Oxford, MS, USA. From September 2012 to March 2013, he is an Endeavour Visiting Associate Professor at the University of Hong Kong. He has been awarded several prestigious fellowship titles. He was named a Queensland International Fellow (2010-2011) by the Queensland Government of Australia, an Endeavour Research Fellow (2012-2013) by the Commonwealth Government of Australia, a Smart Futures Fellow (2012-2015) by the Queensland Government of Australia, and JSPS Invitational Fellow jointly by the Australian Academy of Science and Japanese Society for Promotion of Science (2014-2015). He was recently appointed as an adjunct professor and external PhD advisor by Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), a China 9 member university.

Assoc Prof Xiang has had over 150 publications in peer-reviewed conferences and journals. He has received over $1M million (including industry con-contributions) external research income to support research projects of $2M in total value. A/Prof Xiang is known for his pioneering work on 3D video communications leading to the proposal of a world’s first conceptually innovative autostereoscopic (glasses-less) 3-D telehealth system, due to which a prestigious Smart Futures Fellow (SFF) was awarded in 2012.


Assoc Prof Xiang received the Best Paper Award at 2011 IEEE WCNC in Paris, and 2009 ICWMC in Cannes, France. He is Chair of ISCIT’2012 QoE Workshop. He served as a Keynote Speaker at 2011 IET ICSSC and 2012 MobiQuitous conferences. His research interests are in the broad area of communications and information theory, particularly coding and signal processing for multimedia communications systems.
